Dorset Walks: Hilton to Bulbarrow

Spring has sprung here in Dorset, the warmer weather graced us with its presence for about a week before retreating to frost, but the fields, woodlands and hedgerows are looking more beautiful than ever and I cannot wait to see what Spring 2022 has to offer.

Walking more of Dorset is a little promise I am making to myself for the next year. I love my walks and so does my four-legged fur-baby so it’s only right that we go on plenty of them to explore more of this beautiful county. We started a couple of weeks ago with a 3.8 mile stroll from Hilton to Bulbarrow during the first of the warmer weather. This was the route we took and I filmed the whole thing, scroll down to take a look!

The highlight of the walk was certainly the stunning views across Dorset; the elevation at one point was around 140m meaning we had many glorious viewpoints over the rolling fields. There was also a lovely memorial rest-stop along the journey in honour of Mark Batchelor, they had a little guest book which I wish I could have written in but the pen had run out! The collection of memorabilia, plants and other lovely bits and pieces was unlike anything I had seen before and so touching to see someone’s fond memory living on in this way.

The lowlight of the walk was Riley treading in some baby stinging nettles rendering him unable to walk and shaking like a little leaf, so I scooped him up in my coat and carried all 16kg of him down a 100m decline before he spotted a pheasant and promptly leapt from my arms, forgetting all about his injury and bounding off as if nothing had happened…!

This Hilton to Bulbarrow walk is definitely one I would do again, my only advice is to be cautious on the road parts as people drive fast on country lanes, but the rest of the walk, bar those five minutes, was perfect for Riley to be off the lead exploring. Let me know in the comments if you have tried this walk or if you have any other Dorset walk recommendations!
